Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) investigation in Salt Mine

Subject: Determination of the extent and location of possible voids under the concrete slab and the bottom edge of the process water tank in a Salt Mine.
GPR investigation took place in a Salt Mine in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland

The study aimed to determine the extent and location of possible voids under the concrete slab and the bottom edge of the process water tank in a Salt Mine. During the investigation, water was pumped out from the tank making it possible to perform measurements of the undisturbed water layer. At the bottom of the tank remained the sludge layer having a thickness of about 40 to 60 cm. The investigation was performed in parallel lines, with two frequency ranges of antennas (600 and 1600 MHz for each line) to provide good resolution at the slab surface. Profiles were located about 0.5 m from each other. Interpreted GPR data outlined the structure of the upper layers of the subsoil and identified changes to a depth of about 2.0 m below the test surface and about 2.5 m for profiles on tank edges.
