Melaphyre deposits survey

Our company performed geophysical analysis using the SGE (VES) geoelectric sounding method. It was commissioned by Melaphyre mine near Wałbrzych.

The aim of the Melaphyre deposits survey:
– to identify and determine the conditions and depth of the deposit and its spatial extent,
– to document prospective zones of the occurrence of deposits of the Melaphyre for further exploitation.

Electro-resistance soundings allow for observing changes in electrical resistance by increasing the spacing of current electrodes. For each sounding point, a sounding curve shows changes in apparent resistivity (depending on the electrode spacing). Quantitative interpretation of soundings consists of determining the thickness and resistivity of geological layers based on the field curve measured at the sounding site.

Our measurements were performed using specialist geophysical equipment manufactured by the Czech company GF Instruments s.r.o. – ARES II 850W.

Melaphyre (Trachybasalt) is an alkaline volcanic rock occurring as bed intrusions of irregular extent. In Poland, it occurs mainly in the Sudetes region (around Wałbrzych) and on the border of the Małopolska and Silesian Voivodships. It is used, among others, in railway construction (an ideal ballast for railway tracks, improving their durability and stability) and road construction (added to asphalt, it significantly improves its quality and strength). It can also be used as an aggregate in concrete production, affecting its strength and durability.

Combining current and archival research results will give our Client a comprehensive picture of the deposits’ occurrence. This will enable the planning of further mining works in the quarry.
